* Recently found on some loose notepaper in John's Journals is the following description leading up to the death of his mother on June 1, 1934. In his journal he never usually went into this much detail, so this was a surprising find *
This photo of Elizabeth Jane West Barker was professionally done about 1915
She went to hosp Jan 11, was operated on and came home Feb 13. Moved to the hosp again April 21st and came home again, then was admitted to the hospital May 5th. Same day they did tests, nurse called that evening, she wanted to see me. I went in to see her, she was very weak, said she had a rough day. It was noisy, I had trouble hearing her, so I told her I would see her the next day.
I went to see her the next day but she was asleep. I spoke to the lady next to her. She said she was restless and moaning until they gave her some pills. This made her sleep all night and all day. I went back after supper, but she did not see me, she was coughing and her throat was gurgling like she had flem in her throat. I asked her if she knew I was there, she made a yes nod with her head. When I left the nurse asked me how long she had cancer and she said she was not well at all. The nurse said they were going to call in the doctor and i anything went wrong during the night they would send a message. I did not get any message so went at 9am, took her toothbrush and comb, etc. She looked better and was getting blood at 2pm. At 7pm when I went she was asleep.
I went back the next day at 2pm. She was awake, but after 15 minutes she went to sleep. The nurses laughed.
I went in at one on Sunday and i had a Mother's day bouquet and a card for her. I showed it to her, she said she could not see it, so I put on her glasses for her and she took a look at it and I asked her again if she liked it. she said oh its alright but she was smiling so she could not hid how happy she was with it. There was that twinkle in her eye.
After about 1 hr I said I guess you'd like a little rest so I'll leave you and I will see you tomorrow. She said OK and Goodbye. That was the first time I remember her saying goodbye. I think I brought her a little happiness.
Monday, I saw her for 15 minutes during my lunch break, she went to sleep when I left. Rhoda went with me to see her the next day and she didn't like what she saw, she didn't want to talk about it. Rhoda came by to see me the next day after supper but I was visiting Mom even tho she was sleeping when I was there.
They put a bag on her, that bag was put on and she she wanted to know why, I didn't know. One night when I sat with her she started choking and the nurse took something out of her mouth.
Mom. saw her at 2pm, she was awake for a change. The nurse said she had a good breakfast and ate her soup at noon. I had a good chat with her. I told her she better keep on eatins so she could come home and help me with the garden. She smiled and said she was tired. She said I had a nice shirt on. I am going home happy.
After supper I decided to go and see her. I had some seeds to show her but when I got there the curtains were drawn around the bed. I waited for 15 - 20 min. I didn't see anybody around and I did not look in. The other lady had alot of company so I did not ask her if Mom was asleep. So I figured she was asleep and everything was okay.
7am Remington phoned and said she was gone. it was a shock. The doc said they knew it was coming fast but I didn't expect it so soon. He said we thought we got all the cancer but we didn't. They didn't show us her body. I didn't ask to see it. The undertaker asked me if I wanted to see it and I hesitated. Then he said "I don't recommend it, she going to be in a cardboard box and a body doesn't appeal to everyone. I said she looked good yesterday and it's better that way.
