**note to readers concerning these journals – because most days writings by John were repetitious and the reading and transcribing of them would be tedious and boring, I have chosen to only transcribe selected days that vary from the normal everyday things. I have transcribed the everyday life for about the first two weeks that are written in this book to establish the normal. Days that mention any activities by the "children or grandchildren are included. ***

November 14, 1962 Weather clo - cool, t at noon 30+

up 7am dressed breakfast, then shaved and washed, talked, ready KR, out in car, usual stops, to work, Ross still helping unloading car from Quebec, orders til 10, tea, orders til 12, out to bank, home, lunch, talked, left back to work, same as morning til 3, tea, orders & unloading til 5, took Doreen home, picked up Rhoda, then home, read paper, supper, talked, Rhoda gone back to work, slept til 7pm watched TV most of the night, Rhoda home at 10:20pm talked, ate, bed.
November 15, 1962 Weather: clo, cool, t at noon 26+
up 7am, dressed shaved, washed, breakfast, talked, KR, left, usual stops, to work, orders til 10, tea, unloading car from Quebec, we sure have a heavy stock now, car & orders til 1pm to drugstore, got Rhoda & Linda to Deer Lodge bus stop, so slippery & rain freezing, Rhoda didn’t want the car, to work, orders til 3pm, talked, McKay, Jake, McIvor, mac’s son fired, N. Nadurak transfered to Dauphin or else fired, Lyle tranfered to Ft William & Moorhead brought to Wpg. Whats going on in the company anyways, I hope they never start on the warehouse, out at 5, read paper dozed Rhoda home at 6:30pm supper, talked, tv rest of evening, Bed. 11:30pm

November 16, 1962 Friday Weather: p. clo1, cool, t at noon 24+

up 7am, dressed, shaved, washed, breakfast, talked, KR, usual stops, to work orders til 10, tea, orders til 1pm, to drugstore, got Rhoda home, lunch, dozed, back to work, nothing doing till 4pm, swept floor and other things till 5pm, took Doreen home, read paper, supper, dozed, washed & changed, Rhoda and I to Westwood Collegiate, saw Linda Y others receive their Grades 11 & 12 Matric, Listened to some speeches & one was a real good one, left there at 9:05pm downtown, parked car on Garry, to bowling Alley, bowled only 2 games for 404, avg. 203, out to car and home 11:05pm, talked, told Rhoda that Jack can’t bowl because of a league ruling, ate, bed.

November 17, 1962 Saturday Weather: clo, cold, t at noon 24+

November 24, 1962, Saturday Weather: clo, mild, t at noon 33+

up 8am dressed washed, breakfast, talked, started car, left to work at 8:30am, reasealing cartons til 12, home, lunch, talked, took Rhoda to work then did shopping, Linda with me, she drove the car home. Put groc’s away then left to work, reasealing cartons while listening to football game, Score Calgary 7 Winnipeg 12, wpg now in Grey Cup next Saturday. up 7:30am dressed, washed, breakfast, talked, fooled around, started car, let it run, Rhoda ready, started to take her to work, then decided it wasn’t so slippery so she drove herself, in, watched Grey Cup parade on TV til 10:30 am, Jack & Joan & Barbie are here, watched Grey Cup game on TV til 3pm when they had to postpone game on account of fog, there was 9 mins 29 secs left to play, will be played on Sunday, Score Wpg 28 Hamilton 27 talked, Rhoda home, dozed in chair, supper, cake and gifts, Slippers from Jack & Joan, square for measuring from Linda, gloves from Rhoda, talked, played with boys downstairs curling, tv hockey game, then we played cards til 10;30pm, took our car out of driveway to let Jack out, put car back in, they are gone, Bed.

December 2, 1962, Sunday Weather: sunny 32+

up 8:30 am dressed, lip sore, washed, breakfast, talked, did writing, watched finish of Grey Cup game on TV, final Score Wpg 28, Hamilton 27, dozed for awhile, lunch, Dave & Bett here & left kids here while they went to see Barbie at Childrens Hospital, Dave brought me some Rabbits ears wire too, I put it up but found it still wasn’t enough, talked, supper, dozed, Dave & Bett back and stayed til 10:30pm, plugged car in, they are gone, football til 12am, then bed.

December 5, 1962, Wednesday Weather: clo, cold, t at noon 12+

up 7am dressed, shaved washed, breakfast, talked, left, usual stops to work, orders til 10, tea, orders til 1pm out to drugstore, got Rhoda then home, lunch, left to work, orders til 3, tea, orders til 5, home, read paper, supper, dozed, changed, out with Rhoda and Gerry to a cub meeting what Gerry’s in, to see him made a cub, pretty good, hand to go & put cub tie on Gerry, lasted til 8pm then they were finished, home, TV rest of night til 11pm, Gerry has a cold, talked and then to bed.

up 8am, dressed, washed, breakfast, talked, did a few things, took Linda and boys to church, home, started to put X lights around the front window, did that til 12, out to church & picked up Linda & boys, home, lunch, took Rhoda to work, home, car stiff, plugged car in, dozed for awhile, finished lites around window, out at 4:50pm to drugstore, got Rhoda, home, supper, Rhoda gone back to work with car, washed dishes, watched TV til 8:30pm Rhoda home, talked, ate, & to bed.

December 14, 1962 Friday Weather: mild, t at noon 16+

up 7am dressed, shaved, washed, breakfast, left at 7:50, Doreens, P.O., to work, talked, orders til 10, tea, orders til 12, out in car home, read, lunch, took R. To work, helped unloading trailer from Quebec til 3, tea, orders til 5 took D home then to drugstore at 5:20 got Rhoda, home, read paper, supper, took Rhoda to work, home slept til 7, had a bath, shaved & washed, changed, gave orders to the boys, left at 8:10pm, picked up Eileen, downtown, parked on Garry St to bowling alley, bowled good, 654, avg 208, out in car, dropped Eileen off, home talked, ate, bed. I’m very much fed up with everything, especially our love life because of the attitude Rhoda has towards it and everything else most of the time, finally got to sleep.

December 16, 1962 Sunday Weather: milder, t at noon 18+

up 8:30am, dressed, washed, breakfast, talked then I tried to fix Vacuum & did other things most of the morning, Jack phoned & is bringing tree over today, but we will be out, lunch, talked, then at 2:40 took Rhoda and kids to Holy Trinity church to see Xmas Pagent, over to Betts, waited til 4pm, with Heather and bed, got groc’s and laundry while she washed & dried clothes at laundermat, there til 5, took them home, left to church, R & chris & gerry had been waiting since 4:40, home, tree is here & is quite a size. Read, TV, supper, talked & different things, TV til 11:30pm, bed.

December 20, 1962 Thursday Weather: mild, t at noon 9+

up 7am, dressed, shaved & washed, breakfast, started car, talked, tea, left, usual stops, to work, orders til 10, tea, unloading box car til 12, home, lunch, left 12:50pm, took Rhoda to work, unloaded boxcar til 4:30pm , checked orders, had Xmas given out, 2 pakts of cigarettes, took girls home, to drugstore for Rhoda, grocs & hardware for sandpaper, home, got supper cooked & had it, slept on chesterfield til 7, TV til 8pm, down to basement, sandpapering chairs til 9, talked to insurance man til 9:30pm, writing, got dog in, out to drugstore to get Rhoda, took Ida home, finished writing, ate, talked, bed.

up 7:30 am dressed washed, shaved, breakfast, talked, got ready, left at 9:30am, Linda with me, traffic heavy, finally left Linda out at Graham and Smith St. Drove around then finally parked in usual lot at Eatons, exchanged Gifts, looked around for other things, no find, to car, home, talked, lunch, out at 1pm and took Rhoda to work, home, washed basement floor, waxed it, polished silver & spread the dried bread, out at 4:30 to drugstore, got Rhoda, home, supper, talked, took Rhoda back to work, home, finished basement decorations, washed kitchen floor, because Linda was wrapping presents, washed bathroom floor, out at 9:50 to drugstore, talked, had a drink, took Ida home, then home, talked finished wrapping gifts, put them around tree, bed 1:30am

Christmas Day
December 25, 1962 Tuesday Weather: cold, t at noon 12-

up 8am dressed washed, everyone up, breakfast, then opened gifts, car seat from Rhoda, desk calender from Linda, handkerchiefs from boys, sealer carrying case from Joan and Jack, socks from Bett and Dave (2pr) 1pr from Mum and Norman, fooled around with things awhile, lunch, dozed til 3pm, then washed, shaved, changed, now everything set, Jack & Joan arrived at 2:30pm, Mr. Mrs Allen (?) Dropped in for a while, and Jack took them to where they were going, Dave & Bett arr at 3pm, Norman & Mum via taxi, fooled in basement til 5:30pm, had X dinner down there, sat around awhile, then played basement hockey til 9pm, played cards awhile, Jack brought his guitar but hardly used it, Bett & Dave left at 12, dozed, Jacks car won’t go, got mine going, Jacks finally went, they left, taking Mum & Norman hom enroute, they arr ok, Jack phoned to say so, bed at 2:35.

December 26, 1962 Wednesday Weather: milder, t at noon 2+

up 8:30am dressed washed, breakfast, sat around and talked, fooled arround most of the time, got ready, all of us, out in car, over to Jacks, parked car on Monroe, talked, played games, before & after dinner, Mr & Mrs Bevan dropped in, there til 12:10am, out to car but it won’t go, went in for awhile, still won’t go, everyone in car, Jack in his car gave me a push to Gateway Rd. & south & finally got it going, pin a few more dents in it and also broke off my license plate lite, home, by 1;30am, talked and so to bed.

December 31, 1962 Monday Weather; cold

No record of day, Rhoda worked, I never.
So ends 1962, a year that started with a $200.00 a year raise, it stayed that way with not much bright spots, we took a few trips, had a swell time in all of them, but we still haven’t got to Banff yet, Xmas was good and now we have to catch up on our debt.

up at 8;30am talked about Dave going to Moose Jaw & such, breakfast, read, started to take room apart in basement, did that on & off most of the day, had lunch at 1pm, slept, did some more around house, had supper at 6, TV rest of the evening, bed 11;30pm

January 9, 1963 Wednesday Weather: cloudy, cold, t at noon 7-

up 7am dressed, washed, breakfast, shaved, ready started car, tea, left, 7:50 am, usual stops to work, in, orders til 10, tea, got called in office was told, I will get a $300.00 a year raise which will make it $4500.00 a year, home at 12 told Rhoda, lunch, left to work, orders til 3, tea, orders til 5, took D home, to drugstore, got Rhoda, home, supper, out, took Rhoda to work, home, read paper, slept til 7pm, did a little more in basement, TV til 10, out to service station, gas, to drugstore got Rhoda & took Ida home, finished writing, talked, ate, bed.

up 8am, dressed, washed, shaved, breakfast, talked, took Rhoda to work, home, did dishes, took Linda to Eatons, then over to Dr McTavish in Elmwood with sample for Linda, to Arts, he’s working talked with Eleanor and left some tobacco for Art, to Lil’s talked had tea and cake, left at 12:30 to drugstore, got Rhoda, to I.G.A. got groceries, home, put groc’s in and away, read, lunch, dozed, Rhoda gone back to work, I worked in basement most of afternoon, read paper, Rhoda home, supper, Linda home, talked did some more in basement, TV rest of night, hockey and other things, Patsy is in heat so we will have to take her out for walks, read, ate, bed 11:30pm

January 13, 1963 Sunday Weather: cold, t at noon 15-

up 8am, dressed, washed, breakfast, worked downstairs all morning, lunch, out with Rhoda in car and dog, to Ness Ave. Road around awhile because car was hard to start, stopped, let dog run awhile, then home, in shaved, washed supper, TV til 7, Rhoda and I to Bett’s took her to laundermat on Pembina Hiway to wash clothes, took 45 mins, took her home then we got home by 9pm, talked and other things, so Rhoda has been put back to part time work beginning next week so that means half the wages shes been getting, talked, TV til 11, windchill today was equal to 71 below, to bed.

January 19, 1963 Saturday Weather: cloudy, cold, t at noon 21-

up at 8:30, dressed washed, breakfast talked, fooled around doing different things til 10am, started car, talked, took Linda as far as Ferry Rd where she caught a bus to go to work, made a cardboard cover for front of car to stop draft, attached same with wire, also put in more anti freeze. Read, had lunch out at 12;50 took Rhoda to work, to I.G.A. got groc’s, to bakery for bread, to drugstore, gave Rhoda money, home, put stuff away, TV most of afternoon, slept from 3:45 to 4:30, TV til 6, got supper ready, ate, Linda home, there is quite a blizzard most of afternoon, TV til 9:45, started car, then shovelled some snow, left to drugstore, got Rhoda, took Ida home, talked, ate, bed 12:30am

January 24, 1963 Thursday Weather cold, t at noon 15-

up 7am, dressed shaved washed, breakfast, waiting for D.O. Hare, but he’s having car trouble, talked about Rhoda trying Avon selling, Darrell here at 8:20, to work, orders til 10, tea, orders til 12, lunch, phoned & car not ready, dozed, & talked, then orders til 3, tea, went with Danny part way then to MacDonalds, waited til 5:35, got car, home by 6pm, read paper, supper, TV & slept til 8:15, out to stores & back, Jack & Joan here, and Joan has dyed her hair blonde, not too bad. Talked, ate, & other things, they left at 10pm, talked, bed, 11pm.

January 27, 1963 Sunday Weather: clear & sunny, t at noon zero

up 8:30am dressed, breakfast, talked, having turkey today, Bett & Dave, family, Jack & Joan coming over talked, finished painting table & chairs, talked &a few other things, lunch then out in car, Rhoda I and boys & dog, Patsy, out to Perimeter, boys gave Patsy a good run, back at 3, talked, read, Dave & Bett & kids here, talked, tried to work out Dave’s income tax, couldn’t quite figure it out, they have gone to see Barbie in Hospital, I phoned Art & found out how to do it, Jack & Joan here, supper, turkey and usual trimmings, Dave & Bett back, He found out how to do it too, played tennis & hockey in basement, Dave & Bett left at 9:30, Jack & Joan at 10:30, talked and so to bed.

January 30, 1963 Wednesday Weather: milder, t at noon 1+

up 7am, dressed shaved washed, ate, talked , put garbage out front, started car, left 7:45am, usual stops, to work, in orders, til 10, tea, orders til 12, out and home lunch, talked, left to work, Rhoda gone with car to take the table & chairs to Bett’s then they went to hospital & brought Barbie home for 1/st time in over a year, orders til 3:30pm tea, orders til 5, out Rhoda waiting, to P.O. took Doreen home then Rhoda and I home, read paper, supper, slept til 7:30pm up TV & Chris finally got home for 4:30 when school was out, downstairs, did some writing, TV rest of evening. up 7am, dressed, shaved, washed, breakfast, talked, satred car, brushed all the snow off car, still snowing, left 7:45, usual stops to work, a few orders til 10, tea, orders til 12, out in car to home, lunch, left, took Rhoda to work, then me to work in orders til 3, tea, orders til 5, wind blowing bad, blizzard conditions, to P.O. took Girls home, then home, then went out again to drugstore & got Rhoda, home again, read paper supper, slept til 7:30, washed, and changed, N. Lennox here to look after boys, while we are out, read, left, 8:15pm, Rhoda and Linda with me, picked up Eileen, took R&L to Arena to see Icecapades, they had to walk a block on account of traffic, downtown, parked car, to bowling alley, bowled good, 636, avg 210, out to car, to Arena, show won’t be over til 12, so took Eileen home, back to Arena, parked car and saw part of show, waited & watched for R & L, & finally found them, to car, home by 12:30am, talked ate, tv til 1:30am, Norman gone, bed, slept.

up 8:30am, dressed, washed, breakfast, did a few things, lunch at 1pm, talked, shaved washed, change, over to Bett’s in Ft. Garry, a sorta Xmas for Barbie, she opened presents. Norman, Linda and boys gone toboganning, sat around and talked, Dave gone back to Moose Jaw to work. Norman and kids back at 5:30pm we left at 6:30 home, Mum came too, talked and other things, showed slides, they left at 10:30pm put stuff away, bed 11:15pm, did some loving, then slept

February 16, 1963 Saturday Weather: cloudy & mild, t at noon 11+

up 8:30am dressed, washed, sat & talked, figured out groc list, which won’t be much on account of shortage of money, owing to Rhoda’s short hours of work, did shopping, home, put stuff away, dozed, had lunch, everyone gone out, laid down with Rhoda, slept, then we did some petting & loving, up 3:30pm dressed, fooled around, took Rhoda to work, big accident on Portage, w or more cars involved, home, read paper, TV supper, just boys and I, Linda at work, Boys out , just me, watched TV til 9:55pm, Gerry home and had a new pair of boots, stolen?, out in car, to drugstore, got Rhoda, home, TV ate, Rhoda gone to bed, I watched tv til 1:15am then bed.

February 20, 1963 Wednesday Weather: cold, t at noon 20-

up 7am, dressed, shaved, washed, breakfast, talked, listened to radio, out to car, won’t go, a very cold wind is blowing at 40 mph, windchill of 80-, in waited awhile, tried again, no go, was going to take Rhoda to Betts, but won’t, phoned Darren, then phoned s. station, they came in 10 mins, tried to start car, no dice, tried to pull me, but slid into snow bank, got stuck, after pushing & bumping me got straight, pulled me on to street & pushed me to s. station where we got car started, left to work by 9:10am talked, orders til 10:30 tea, orders til 12, out, took D. Home then home, in, lunch talked , left 12:50, got D. To work, in orders til 3:30, tea, orders til 5, out in car, home, got meal ready, supper, just 3 of us, Linda now home, read paper, laid down, slept til 7pm Linda gone babysitting across the street, TV til 9:40, out, started car, TV til 10, out to drugstore, got Rhoda, home, phoned Norman, talked, tea, ate, bed, rubbed linement on Rhoda’s legs, did some loving, slept.

February 23, 1963 Saturday Weather: clo, mild t at noon zero

up 8:30 am dressed, washed, breakfast, read, dozed awhile, downstairs & straightened up basement, all morning, did a few other things, Rhoda arranging on phone for tonight, lunch at 12:30, Jack & Joan here and took Linda & Chris toboganning at Lockport, out to bakery, to I.G.A. to hardware, hockey stick for Chris, home, put stuff away, Gerry out playing, run polisher over floor, dozed in chair awhile, did a few things til 4;30. Jack Joan, Linda & Mum here talked, TV supper, TV til 8:30, Jack & Joan gone to get Jessie & Bett, talked, got things ready for Movie in basement, they are back at 9pm. Looked at Norman’s pictures til 11pm, ate & talked til 1am, rest gone, Rhoda & I took Jessie & Bett home, home 1:45 am, bed.

Orders til 12, home, lunch, dozed talked about Kay McEwen & her troubles, her husband lost his job, KR, left 12:50 to work, orders til 3:30, tea, orders til 5, home, Rhoda at work, so got supper ready, Linda home, supper, slept til 8pm, TV til 8:30 writing, TV & other things til 9:45 out, started car left to drugstore, got Rhoda, home, in, ate, tea, talked, bed, slept.

February 27, 1963 Wednesday Weather: fair, cold, t at noon 1+

up 6;50 am dressed, shaved, washed, breakfast, and talked, out started car, put garbage out, talked, left 7:50, usual stops, to work, talked orders til 10:30, tea, orders til 12, out in car to home, lunch, talked, left. Because some cigts were stolen in Montreal we have to mark cases differently, going out to try & catch them, but why here? Orders til 3, tea, orders til 5, out in car, rec’d $5 from Doreen for Transportation, took her home, gave Rhoda $5 for Birthday Presents for Jack & Bett, read paper, supper, slept til 7:50, downstairs, writing, talked, TV til 11;15, had tea, bed, did some loving, then slept.

March 2, 1963 Saturday Weather: partly cloudy, mild, t at noon 5+

up at 7:15, dressed, breakfast, read, did writing, haven’t felt good these last few days so just fooled around all morning, lunch at 12, Bett was coming over, but never showed up, slept part of afternoon, so did Rhoda, out, in car, Rhoda & I to I.G.A, got groc’s home, put stuff away, had tea, talked then took Rhoda to work, home, read paper, supper, TV til 7:20, took Linda to W. Kildonan, on Jefferson Ave, to Barbara’s place, Linda’s friend from there. Home, in, TV til 9:50pm out in car to drugstore, got Rhoda, talked, tv, Rhoda’s doing okay with Avon, bed, slept.

March 7, 1963 Thursday Weather: partly cloudy, cool, t at noon 20+

up 7am, dressed, shaved, washed, breakfast, talked, radio, out 7:50, left, picked up girls, to P.O., to work talked, orders til 10:30, tea, we hear they are going to fill in pit & make a smaller shipping door& we might be able to have the plywood & 2 x 4 from pit enclosure, orders to 12, out, home, lunch, read, talked, dozed, left to work, orders til 3:30, tea, orders til 5, out, snowing to beat the devil. In car to P.O. took girls home, car acting up, to drugstore, got grocs, to top of street, car is wet, can’t start it, police came & helped me put it to the curb, walked home from there, read paper had supper, sat awhile, out to corner to car, she started, home, cleaned snow from driveway, now wind is blowing & visibility is down to zero, it lasted about an hour, & temperature dropped to zero. We are in a bad financial situation because Rhoda is not making enough money to help, looks as if we might ask for aditional loan at bank, unless something turns up. Tv til 10 out, started car & shovelled snow, from driveway, Linda home, left to drugstore, Rhoda as usual has someone to take home, Carrie on Mt. Royal, then car acting up again, but made it to home, talked, ate, bed.

up 8am, dressed washed, breakfast, talked, & read paper, out, shovelled snow from driveway, & from car, in, read, fixed sliding door in boys cupboard, downstairs did writing, boys feeling a little better, talked, washed kitchen floor, & basement stairs, lunch, talked laid down & slept til 3:30, out in car, Rhoda & I to I.G.A. got grocs, home, put stuff away, talked, supper, out took Rhoda to work at 5 home, read, TV til 8:30, Jack& Joan here, helped him with his tax return, Rhoda home at 10:30. Linda babysitting across the street, talked & tv til 12:30, ate, J&J gone, bed, did some loving, then slept.

Rhoda with me, I took her to Deer Lodge where she caught bus, to Doreens, to P.O., to work, orders til 10:30, tea, orders til 11:30, took D home, to bank then home, Rhoda not home til 12:10, lunch, talked, left 12:40, to D’s for her, to work, Rhoda gone with car to a Avon meeting, orders til 3, tea, Bryan has started to pull wals of pid down, orders til 5, Rhoda here, took D home then home, in read paper, supper, tv, slept til 7:30, then downstairs and did writing til 9:30, helped Rhoda with her Avon problems then bed. 11:30pm

To work, a few orders til 10:30, tea, talked to workmen who were filling in pit, orders til 11:30, out in car, took Doreen home, then home, lunch, left, Rhoda with me, to D’s to work, Rhoda gone with car, orders til 3pm, tea, orders til 5, out Rhoda here, in car, took D to bus station, to Polo Park, Perths drycleaning, then home by 6:10pm read paper, supper, dozed, out in car, took Linda to to school for a special concert, home, shaved & washed, changed, ready, took Rhoda to school, home, phoned a couple places looking for Chris, he’s home, left at 8:20 picked up Eileen, downtown, parked car, to bowling alley, bowled very poor, 533, avg 212, out home, Rhoda not home yet so went looking for them, found them on Portage & brought them home, talked, helped make beds, TV til 1:15am bed.
