January 2, 1940 Tuesday Weather: fair & cold, temp at noon, zero

Miss Johnson here from next door saying Erzinger's will be here in 15 min - Chuck here, told him I could not go right away account I had to do some things first here, he's gone, got fires going, Rhoda up, breakfast, talked, got wood in, to store to phone Erzinger's, Herb said not to come in, got Archie Sinclair's son there, home, got water for washing, lunch, started washing, laid down about 3:30pm, dozing, Mr Johnson here from next door said Erzinger's phoned, went next door to phone Erzinger's, Mr McCelland said to come in tomorrow, back, told Rhoda, washing finished, dumped water, Rhoda not feeling well, supper, read paper, Rhoda laid down and slept til 8pm, washed dishes, woke Rhoda, dried dishes, talked, went out and chopped wood, brought it in for morning, brought coal in, emptied ashes from both stoves, got water, listened to radio til 10:30pm, wrote in diary, bed, 11:30pm.

February 28, 1938 Monday Weather: clear and mild, temp at noon +30F

up 9:30am, dressed, breakfast, Lily went out and phoned, shes back, no change, dressed and went to Lennox's on Winterton Ave and told Mrs Lennox, left there 11am, home, laid on bed til 12, lunch, read, Lily back, doc says okay for me to see Rhoda, dressed, ready, out to St Joseph's hospital on Salter, Rhoda gave birth to a baby girl between 2 and 3 pm, I have not found out right time yet. I wish it were a boy, but maybe next time, stayed with Rhoda til 4pm, went down to nursery and saw baby, cutest little thing, but it hollered when I looked at it and even more when I touched it, home, told Art and family, sent Norma with a note to Lennox's but they were out, read paper, supper, out to Lennox's, talked to Mr Lennox, met Mrs Lennox on way home, told her, met Harold Baird and rode around with him, he took me out to hospital, stayed with Rhoda til 8pm, left to Rosies, Lily there, read & slept til 11pm, Rose & Harold back, talked, had tea & cake, left 12:10am, brought crib home with me, bed.

up 8:40am, dressed, breakfast, radio not working, fixed it, washed dishes, Lily gone to phone as pup is not so good, read & worked crossword puzzle til 11:45, lunch, Lily back, out to streetcar to Artic Ice on Bell Ave, got Bob's car, home, took Lily & dog to vets on Sherbrooke st. dog fair, took Lily & Rose to hospital to see Rhoda, I stayed outside in car with Bryan, Rose's son, he woke up crying but I managed to get him rocked back to sleep, left hosp 4:10pm, home with Rose & Lily, to Artic Ice with car, walked to Broadway Ave streetcar home, read paper, set table, made supper, dressed & washed, out to St Jos Hosp to see Rhoda, left 8:18 pm after nurse yelled at me for staying too long, home 8:35pm, read, looked at furnace, wrote in diary, Rhoda told me baby was born at 1:45pm one Monday, read, laid on chesterfield til 11:15pm, had cocoa and cake, up, Bed, had to get up to let Lily in at 1:40am, bed, slept.

up at 7am, dressed, breakfast, KR, left to corner to streetcar to Erzinger's orders til 2:30pm, stocktaking til 5:30pm, asked boss about coming to work anymore, he says no, except on Saturdays - the dirty son of a bitch - someday he'll get his I hope, met Mr & Mrs L on streetcar, talked, home, Rhoda says Lily out, so I'll have to take turkey back myself, supper, laid down slept til 8, up to Chalmers to get turkey, to Plickes Butcher ship, no turkey's got money back, chased around other places to find a good bird, to Lennox's, talked, to Elmwood, Mrs L. finally got a bird at Lakeys, home, tea & bread, bed.

December 31, 1939 Sunday Weather: cold, snow, temp at noon -1F

up 9:30am, fixed fires, got breakfast, Rhoda up, brought in wood, talked, chopped kindling, got water, lunch, mopped floor, Norman Lennox here with turkey, he's gone, talked, shaved, emptied water, got coal, dressed, Mrs. Lennox here, Lily & Norma here, Mr. Lennox & Norman talked, kept fires up, supper, (turkey, I carved it) cranberries, spuds, peas, assorted pickles, tea and ice cream, talked, listened to radio, emptied water, heard New Year's come in across Canada on radio, went outside & made a few noises, had tea & cake, every one gone, bed 3am.

So ends 1939, a poor year for us all around work and home.
